DPG Media
Helping different teams and brands with UX
DPG Media is the largest media company in the Netherlands and reaches a whopping 91% of all Dutch people every month. Their brands include NU.nl, het AD, de Volkskrant, Trouw, Parool, Libelle, VTwonen, Donald Duck and many others.
I was approached by Sandra, my former UX Team Lead at Telegraaf Media Group who had since joined DPG, to work with her as a UX partner on several digital projects. In 2022, our primary focus was on creating a new self-service platform (Mijn Omgeving) for subscribers of all the DPG Media newspapers and magazines.
During 2023 my design tasks became much more varied as I worked on both brand-specific assignments and larger cross-brand projects. This page shows a few of the projects I worked on.
1 DPG Media account for all brands
To improve the subscription service experience we designed a new platform with a focus on self-service. The platform connects multiple profiles, subscriptions, and operates for 30+ media labels of DPG Media.
Some of our design strategy keywords were:
- Flexibility: Even though we had a desired user journey in mind, we also had to take into account that certain (old) systems could not be connected or provide the desired user experience (or UI) and easily adjust our designs.
- Scalability: The platform should accommodate growth and future updates, such as adding new features, personalization and conversion/persuasion paths. Sandra created a strong base for the design system, together we continued to add new elements.
- Intuitive: Adjusting a subscription can feel scary for the customer (subscriber), the user might doubt if he/she is doing the right thing. Ease of use, intuitive navigation, clear calls to action, hints and feedback elements were a focus point while designing ánd testing.
HLN – Velo Veilig Vlaanderen
Belgian newspaper ‘Het Laatste Nieuws’ launched an interactive map where cyclists could report dangerous cycling areas. This allowed other cyclists to be notified and it provided feedback to the local and Flemish government regarding areas that required safety improvements.
I created wireframes for the main user journeys and did rapid prototyping. This quickly made the concept clear which helped speed the process along. Dead-ends, unnecessary steps and confusing elements quickly came to light. I iterated and optimized the user flows multiple times. The wireframes and prototype laid out all of the ground work for the visual designer and development.
In the first days of the campaign more than 518.000 people viewed the map and/or reported hazardous cycling locations! Pretty impressive numbers!
Uit Andere Media
Another big project within DPG was “Uit Andere Media,” where we aimed to encourage visitors to log in to gain access to online content of 11 other news sources.
The project kicked off with NU.nl showing a list of ‘Top 5 news articles from other news sources’. While staying on the NU.nl website, you could now read the news articles of other newspapers like AD. A feature that was highly appreciated (and used) amongst users. It persuaded a lot of people to login and upgrade their subscription, which was the business KPI.
I helped to visualize the user journeys, created prototypes for user testing and based on the existing design systems I created the designs from landing page > to login flow > to article page, for multiple platforms like NU.nl, Volkskrant, Libelle etc.
