If you have a drawn out website concept (rough sketches, wireframes or visual designs) it’s smart to turn the most important user journeys into a clickable prototype. Here you see an example I made for man-box, they sell wooden gift boxes (crates) for men that you have to break open with a crowbar.
With a prototype you can experience the user flow for yourself (and click/tap on elements) and know if you offer a good user experience.
Collect feedback and gain insights rapidly
A big PLUS of having a prototype is that you can test it with your target audience / customer! An activity I highly recommend. Collecting feedback from other people and especially from the desired customer is pure gold. This way you will quickly discover what can be improved, what is missing, what’s misunderstood or confusing etc.
And since building a prototype is 10x cheaper and faster to make adjustments to than actually building / developing the website, you don’t have to fear critical feedback. Instead you gain insights, improve your product and get ready for a fantastic launch.
User testing with a clickable mobile prototype
For DPG Media I created the wireframes and test flows for one of their new functionalities. The prototype (made in Figma) was tested with 5 users by DPG’s in-house usability tester. The users were asked to perform 2 main tasks and during the test my role was to observe the user behavior and write down all the insights.
Based on the outcomes of the test and the patterns that emerged I did another design iteration and delivered an optimised UX design.
